Mocktails, Fauxtinis & Booze-less Cocktails

Carla's 365 Day PartyPhoto by Jordan Bruner

Last weekend I had the pleasure of whipping up some specialty cocktails in honor of a lovely lady friend celebrating an entire year without booze. 365 whole days without the hard stuff! Now, that is quite the feat. And to celebrate, she wanted to do it up….with cocktails! Well, these were not the high-octane kind that are usually featured here on this boozy blog. These were of the fauxtini variety, tipples that foxy teetotalers like Carla Rhodes likes to celebrate with. And I was honored to come up with some especially yummy drinks that everyone could enjoy, with or without booze.

If you are not partaking in the giggle water, it can be pretty difficult to find fun and delicious things to drink. Any pregnant woman can tell you what a challenge that can be. There are only so many cranberry and seltzers you can down before you start to snooze into your high-ball glass. At dinner parties and events, the booze-less are often forgotten, stuck with the mixers all night, if they’re lucky. I’ve always found the challenge of coming up with cocktails for people who are not drinking to be a fun one. Everyone deserves to enjoy what’s in their glass! And whether you drink or not, everyone should have a few booze-less cocktails up their sleeve.

For last Sunday’s celebration, Carla made a special request for Shirley Temples. And because I had come up with the perfect recipe for an especially ginger-y version back in February, I knew that would be a breeze.

Find the recipe for the All-Natural Shirley Temples HERE.

I had also made a ton of rose hip syrup for my Mother’s Day cocktail from a few days before, and knew that it would be equally delicious in a fizzy limeade with mint or prosecco, for those that were drinking alcohol.

Rose Hip Limeade – about 6 servings
1 cup of lime juice (6-8 limes)
1 cup of rose hip syrup
Club Soda

In a large pitcher, muddle mint and mix the lime juice and syrup to create a limeade concentrate. Pour the concentrate into tall, ice filled glasses 1/3 of the way full. Fill the rest of the glass with club soda and stir with a straw. Garnish with mint.

The third booze-less cocktail I made last Sunday was inspired by the Brighton Beachcomber cocktail; one of my favorite summer drinks. The combo of coconut water, ginger, lime and cucumber is so flavorful on its own, you barely miss the tequila! Because I was making a big batch of drinks, I decided to make this a blended cocktail. Umbrellas are definitely in order for this one!

Carla and the KokomoCarla’s Kokomo  – about 6 servings

1 liter coconut water
1 1/2 cups ginger syrup
1 cup of lime juice
1/4 cup sliced cucumber
1 cup ice

Blend all ingredients until desired thickness.
Pour into a chilled collins glass.
Garnish with cucumber and umbrella, flamingo, or tropical item of choice!

This was such a fun day! We didn’t even plan to coordinate our adorable outfits, we just DID! So proud of you, Carla! Here’s to another 365 days! Cheers!
